A pilot launch is planned for summer/fall 2026, aiming to explore the impact of fitness on recidivism reduction and examine the fiscal costs of incarceration.
BUF invites young adults impacted by mass incarceration into paid apprenticeships to build meaningful careers as personal trainers.
"When a client walks through our door, they're choosing a trainer who is choosing change—and together they're building the kind of relationships that strengthen individuals and communities alike."
A world where every young adult is empowered to build a purposeful and prosperous life—defined by strength rather than circumstance. BUF is a place where fitness apprenticeships foster new understandings and strengths, one rep, one heartbeat at a time, while personal training enhances each individual's journey.
How BUF Works
Each apprentice works one-on-one with BUF coaches to build the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to become a personal trainer—from Strong Body training and fitness fundamentals to Strong Mind and client relationships.
1. Professional Training
BUF clients receive high-quality personal training from apprentices working under the supervision of an experienced, NASM-certified Head Coach. Clients get focused, individualized training while becoming part of someone else’s path toward a meaningful career.
2. Paid Apprenticeship
Young adults impacted by mass incarceration are paid while they learn. Apprentices build fitness knowledge, practice working with clients, develop Strong Body and Strong Mind skills, and gain real-world experience as personal trainers.
3. Shared Growth
BUF is built on a simple idea: clients and apprentices can get stronger together. Every training session builds fitness, skills, relationships, and opportunity—one rep at a time.
